A hard fought match played in rainy conditions that seemed to transform the ball into a bar of soap and reduced portions of the pitch to a muddy mess. A perfect day to be a forward!
Ajax got on the scoreboard first with an unconverted try despite a valiant goal line stand. The Dragons immediately responded after a well placed penalty kick by fly half Rob Ricci put the lineout within the Ajax 10 yard line. On the ensuing lineout the Dragons won clean possession and formed a perfect maul pushing the Ajax defenders to their goal line. Enterprising new scrum half, Zach Moses, then peeled off the side of the maul and made a desperate leap for the game tying try.
The second half of the game saw the Dragons take the play to Ajax with the majority of the game played in their end. However the Wanderers were up to the task and managed to hold up the ball in their in-goal on 2 attempted scoring drives by the Dragons. After 80 minutes of wet and muddy but competitive play the game ended with a 5-5 draw.
An impressive start to a season that promises success if the 2nds continue to build upon their efforts and maintain their willingness to 'go forward' agressively.
Man of the Match recognition goes out to 3 newcomers who made significant contributions during the game:
3. Andrew Freund (full back)
2. Chris De Benet (prop)
1. Zach Moses (scrum half)
