The first game of the season saw the 1st team taking on the Ajax Wanderers. Coming onto the pitch following the 2nd team match the field resembled the muddy WW1 trenches in Europe. The game started under cloudy skies with a smattering of rain drops which turned into a torrential downpour as the game progressed.
Ajax opened their 2009 campaign with a try in the first few minutes of the game after a misguided quick lineout attempt put the ball at the Dragons 5 yard line. The Dragons attempted to regroup but a series of penalties and an eventual yellow card to Chris 'The Giant' Laasen prevented them from developing a sustained offensive challenge. Ajax kept the pressure up and managed to enter half time with a 12-0 lead.
Coming out of half time, the Dragons continued their offensive woes and further handicapped themselves with a yellow card to Jon "shoehorn" Davis and the season's first red card to Darren "my watch is slow" Richardson. Undermanned and demoralized by a rash of referee non-calls against the apparently squeaky clean Ajax side the Dragons managed to carry the play in the latter stages of the game. Reverting back to the traditional pound it up the field, go forward style of play the Dragons were well within the 10 yard line on numerous occasions looking for the first points of the season. However, Lady Luck was not on their side and in the final play of the game a errant pass out of contact was intercepted by a hard charging Wanderer back who ran the length of the field for the game ending try.
Final score Ajax 29 - Dragons 0
A disappointing start to the season but the Dragons look to regroup and come out hard for the next game, the season's first home game on Family Day (May 23).
Men of the match as viewed by the referee:
3. Jon Davis (Yellow Card)
2. Chris Laasen (Yellow Card)
